Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to achieving Israel’s full war objectives, stating unequivocally that the mission will continue until all Israeli hostages are released, Hamas’s military and governing capabilities are dismantled, and Gaza no longer poses a threat to Israeli citizens.
“The goals of the war are clear and remain unchanged,” Netanyahu said Monday. “We will not stop until every one of our hostages is returned, Hamas’s infrastructure is destroyed, and Gaza is permanently demilitarized.”
The Prime Minister’s comments come as Israel intensifies its military campaign in Gaza under Operation Gideon’s Chariot, a major ground offensive approved by the Israeli Security Cabinet on May 4. According to Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, the latest operations involve significant ground force advances in both northern and southern Gaza.
Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani, IDF spokesperson, outlined the operation’s objectives in a video statement on Monday: “After the October 7th massacre, our mission is clear. Bring our hostages home and dismantle Hamas’s military and governing capabilities.”
The war was sparked on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a deadly surprise attack on southern Israel, killing approximately 1,200 people—mostly civilians—and abducting 251 hostages. According to Israeli intelligence, 57 hostages remain in captivity, with 22 believed to be alive.

Humanitarian Concerns Mount
As the military offensive expands, humanitarian conditions in Gaza continue to deteriorate. On Monday, nine UN humanitarian aid trucks were allowed to pass through the Kerem Shalom crossing into southern Gaza, the first such movement in days.
Tom Fletcher, UN humanitarian coordinator, acknowledged the development but warned it is far from sufficient. “It is a drop in the ocean of what is urgently needed,” Fletcher said. “We have been reassured that our work will be facilitated through existing, proven mechanisms. I am grateful for that reassurance, and for Israel’s agreement to humanitarian notification measures that reduce the immense security threats of the operation.”
UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed grave concern over the escalating violence. “Hundreds of Palestinian civilians, including many women and children, have been killed in recent days,” he said. “I reiterate my call for rapid, safe, and unimpeded delivery of humanitarian assistance at scale.”
Guterres emphasized that ongoing military operations could exacerbate regional instability and condemned any efforts to forcibly displace Palestinian civilians. UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric echoed these concerns, noting that the Secretary-General “welcomes ongoing mediation efforts” but remains deeply alarmed by the situation on the ground.
International Aid Efforts
The United States has stepped up efforts to alleviate the humanitarian crisis. On May 9, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee announced a new U.S.-led aid initiative aimed at restoring humanitarian flows into Gaza. The plan includes support from private security contractors to secure distribution sites—an effort coordinated by the newly formed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). Dozens of contractors arrived in Israel in the days leading up to the renewed aid delivery on May 19.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio added to the urgency, stating that he is “troubled” by the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza and urging swift and increased aid delivery.
Since the expiration of the first phase of a ceasefire agreement on March 2, Israel had halted humanitarian aid. The recent delivery marks the first coordinated entry of aid under a new international framework.
Path Forward
The Israeli Cabinet’s decision to scale up military operations signals a potentially prolonged and intensified phase of the conflict. While international mediators continue to push for a negotiated solution, both the humanitarian and military dimensions of the crisis are growing increasingly complex.
With hostages still in captivity, Gaza’s population facing catastrophic conditions, and fears of regional escalation mounting, the coming weeks are expected to be pivotal for the trajectory of the war and its broader implications for Middle East stability.
